Default Low Rumble and then very loud rattle on tickover

Yesterday driving just 2 miles into town I heard and could feel through the accelerator pedal a low rumble noise a couple of times. I pulled over and there was a very loud rattle (like a chain) on tickover. I revved the engine and the loud rattle stopped and I had a normal tickover.
Driving home all was normal and then later I drove 14 miles to the station and again everything seemed normal.

The car is a 2004 CDTi Connie and has done 165000 miles.

Any ideas of what it could be. Anything to do with the engine I would assume will be expensive and not sure if it would be worth shelling out a lot on an expensive repair.

As I said any ideas would be appreciated.

Any black smoke?

Try unplugging the Maf sensor and see if this helps

I would also check the EGR valve

And check the injectors

From my limited knowledge this would be the first things I would check - I am sure some guys with more expertise will be able to focus more accurately on the issue.

A loud rattle on tickover can just be the exhaust heatshield dropping on to the pipe. It's only held on by dinky bolts and is possible to refix if you've got long arms. Use penny washers instead of the original ones.

Hi all, thanks for all your suggestions.

Definitely not the exhaust heat shield as that was removed over 2 years ago.
If it was crank pulley failure I don't think I would be able to drive at 75 mph for 14 miles from the station to home this morning without a rattle.
No black smoke - engine now seems to running normally - well it has for over 30 miles now and I didn't want to push it too much so didn't go above 75mph.
There is still plenty of oomph when I put my foot down as well.
A colleague at work thinks it was just a bit of dirt in the turbo.
Is that a possibility.
When it first happened and since I revved the engine up the car has driven as smoothly as always and so far there has been no repeat occurance.

I was fearing the worst. Have I been fortunate and it was just a bit of dirt in the turbo or do you think there could be something more serious waiting for me.

I really don't know that much about car engines and don't do any work to the car myself. Most work carried out on the car had been by Lates.

I do appreciate all suggestions.
Cheers, Nasher

A simple diagnostic test. Get a hosepipe ready and with the engine at tickover and clattering, gently spray water onto the crank pulley (maybe best done by reaching underneath to stop you getting too wet). The clattering will quieten down as the water lubricates the collapsed interleaf.

Expect to pay up to£160 for a genuine replacement. The LandRover TD4 pulley is also suitable. Don't buy a cheaper one.

Thanks T-Cut.
The only problem is that the car is no longer clattering.
Since I revved the engine after it had happened I haven't had a repeat of the low rumble (at the time the rumble lasted about 2 seconds and then stopped) and the very loud tickover.
This morning coming home from the station I did over 80 mph and the engine appears to be running totally normal.
I'm off work tomorrow so will have a look at the crank pulley.
Cheers for all your help, Nasher.
