"CD Error" message. Time to trash the old stereo?
Hi,
I got the "CD Error" message yesterday in my V6 and I can`t get the CD changer work anymore. Basically I like to replace the OEM stereo with a better modern one, but have kept the Genuine one in this car as it has all options from the factory and is 100% genuine. So, new stereo or start looking for a good used CD changer?? Or can it be fixed in a way?? |

Try one of those laser lens cleaning CDs. Unlikely to fix it but worth a shot. It could either be a focussing error (stuck/dirty lens or no beam) or a tracking error (pickup sled sticking on rails) so if you can remove the changer and dismantle it then you can check those. Having said that, I can't image they'd be expensive to buy off ebay or from a scrapyard if you wanted to keep original, or replace like I have with an aftermarket one (the Sony 10 disc changer fits nicely in the glovebox though it does almost completely fill it!)

Hello Einar,
The only problem I have ever read about with the CD changer is mechanical. It fails to load a disc which then cannot be read. Mine is currently in this condition awaiting attention. I'd suggest removing the cover, connecting it up and observing. Apply lubricant as necessary. Simon

Basically, its a piece of old **** but I want to keep it for the sake of orginality if useable In my tourer its a handfull of USB sticks with MP3 files that is doing the trick. No need for orginality in that car I will check it up sooner or later. If it fails, I will start looking for a decent double DIN head unit with all the toys installed |

hiya, if it is a kenwood, take it out and take it apart, clean it with canned air, lubricate bits with a very light oil/grease and put it back together. Clean the cd reader bit with a cotton bud and something like isoprofyl alcohol or camera lens cleaner, but do not use this on anything that is made of rubber. Use plain water for that on a cotton bud. Takes about 1/2 hour and hey presto. Thanks Nick

Might be worth adding that it is worth taking static precautions if you are planning on taking it apart.
Optical lasers and static charge are not good bed fellows

I have to say that while I do like originality, upgrading the stereo in my ZT-T really improved the audio quality.
