Default Black coolant expansion tanks?

Hi all,

I have noticed there is two types of coolant expansion tanks on our cars, one yellow/clear (the one on my ZT) and a black one.

Whats the extra pipe on the next of the black for?
Is the black one produced from a different material?

Thanks.

Hi Simon.
If its the little pipe coming from the neck of the filler cap its an over flow pipe and i should imagine the material is the same composite just different colour, and i think cars before 2002 had them of was it the ones made at cowley Arctic

Cheers Arctic, so why has the clear tank not got a overflow pipe? Do you use the same caps?

The earlier tanks had a different cap. The current 140 cap fits all and doesn't use the overflow pipe. It pees itself basically.

It is the standard black tank. It is possible to fit a sensor to it via the socket provided but it won't work as the internal float which actuates is not present. I guess it was the intention to provide for this at some time but it never made it into production.

None had it fitted, in spite of MGR's apparent plan to do so. The moulding under the black tank is a vestige of that plan. Any tank with such a sensor fitted is a DIY job.

Ref: Sensor, what a fantastic idea, why was this not put into production?

Has any member here DIY fitted one of these sensors who are currently using such a device on their car now?
