Hi Paul

You are right and thanks for putting me onto it. I checked into the issue and Canon are aware of the problem. I also tried it out this afternoon on the SX40. Only 1 sec is permitted at ISO 100 and the 1 sec is permitted up to ISO 3200. Less than 1 sec is not allowed by the camera.

chdk.wikia.com offer a firmware download suggesting that users download the latest alpha firmware onto a memory card separate (so as not to void the canon warranty) from the internal memory of the SX40. The firmware has to be compatible with the current version of the SX40 in use. I believe implies that it gets around the missing features such as RAW and the limited exposure time of 1 sec.

I will do more research before I attempt the download.

The SX30 is the same camera body as in the SX40. The processor in the SX40 was changed to reduce noise. Other features which the SX30 has were not carried over to the SX40 and as a result users of the SX40 have lost out on the same qualities in shooting sun rises and night sky shot capabilities which the SX30 has.

Clearly I still have more research to do.

Do you have any thoughts about this Alan?

Out of interest tonight and tomorrow night Venus, Jupiter and earths moon converge. Venus and Jupiter were 20 degrees apart from a viewing perspective and the gap narrows to 10 degrees by the end of the month. A crescent moon joins the show this weekend. The moon then retreats from view but Venus and Jupiter draws closer. The two planets will be 3 degrees apart by mid march.

This can be seen all around the world at twilight!

A good photo Paul from the Pentax?

Tomorrow at twilight if you are able to look out for the moon again, you should be able to capture Jupiter and Venus within the same the vicinity of the moon

Yes the pentax.

I can see them all now but I wanted to see what I could get out of my £25
Takumar 200mm for a close up of the moon. A wider angle star(or planet) shot is next on the agenda.

Orion Nabula

I don't think I'll win any prizes here but it passed a few hours away.

Moon behind a cloud with Venus close by. Jupiter up and left.

Just found an old video on the ISS. This is my first, and so far only attempt to capture the space station passing overhead. This sequence is grossly over-exposed, but the prime objective was to try and track it. At this magnification, it crosses the field of view in 0.1 seconds or so. I had the scope set up to track it automatically using the orbital elements you can download from NORAD. Unfortunately, I hadn't got the scope perfectly set up with the Earth's axis and it zipped out of field. This was captured manually using the altazimuth drives (basically up/down and right/left). Not bad as a first shot.

For comparison, this is what can be done with backyard equipment and a bit of practice. This is NOT MY WORK (linked directly from another site). The range is around 200 miles. Shuttle on the left.

Took the following with an Old Manual 300mm lens. Was playing with it to see how good it was on the D80 Nikon. Was Handheld, and ISO was low, as I wasnt expecting to try and capure a shot like this, so a little camera shake can be seen, but dont often get a chance for a shot like this. SO ...................................
