Default Camshaft end caps

hi all
just purchased 2000 saloon rover 75 1.8, 78000, and very pleased with it. among all the service history, march this year a slight oil leak was detected at main dealers, they cleaned it off etc. stating it poss camshaft end caps, but engine would need stripping, since then have not noticed anything on driveway etc etc or about under the car. is this something i should worry over, or just keep an eye on and just be aware of.
i am completely new to rover but very impressed so far and pray i havent just bought a huge garage bill to cure what seems the only poss snag with the car.
cheers mike

The camshaft end caps certainly don't require the engine to be stripped to replace them, so if that's what your garage would want to do then you need to find another garage.

But it would be worth having them checked and a definitive diagnosis made- if one of them lets go you will loose a lot of oil very quickly.

I'm a bit worried about your garage here ! It's actually the v6 engine which can sometimes have a problem with camshaft end-caps
Yours is a 1.8 4-cyl , which I don't think has them , but has standard oil seals .
Just keep an eye on things for now ; a nice clean engine makes it easy to spot where any leak might be coming from

They must mean the camshaft oil seals (not end caps) at the driven end of the camshafts. A partial stripdown is required if they leak. I would say about 45 mins-1 hrs work to replace both.

I would just monitor the situation, remember just a little oil can make a right mess and can fool you into thinks you have a gusher.
