Strange noise.
Notice that I had some noise coming from the rear passenger wheel a few days ago.
It seemed to sound like something was stuck between the pads and discs or like a calliper was sticking. Kind of a metallic grinding sound. It seemed to start then stop and all will be ok. Finally got around to getting the wheel off today to have a look. Brakes appear fine, pads where good as are the discs( worn but not enough to warrant changing just yet). The disc shield is looking rusty and bits have broken off but couldn't see anything jammed or stuck anywhere but still I have the noise. I turned the wheel both ways and when rotating it backwards it locked still. Moved it forwards and fine. Could this be the bearing on its way out? |

A bearing noise will bea continuous low rumble, most noticeable at some speeds, not something which comes and goes. The sheild you mention seems most likely, or maybe a stone.

Hi there.
Could be handbrake shoes loose in the drum, retaining pins broke/pulled through? Kev |

Thanks guys. To me it sounded like a stone but having checked everywhere a stone could be nothing was found.
Could be the shield but checked most of that. Full strip down next weekend I think. Had a few issues with getting the calliper off today not much room in there |

I'm guessing there's no way to tell it's this problem other than taking off the drum to check? I'm not the most technically minded but hopefully my Haynes manual will help guide me through

If you already have the caliper off, getting the drum off is easy. Just ease the shoe adjustment back, undo the single drum fixing bolt and it should pull away.

I've not managed to get the calliper off yet.
Looks like im going to have to invest in some of those flex head spanners to get in there |
