BMW in fact state that the ENTIRE unit needs replacing not just the oil separator, the part that replaces the cotton filter in our cars, however in our cars as opposed to BMW the unit functions differently as I understand it and as such it needs only occasional checking to ensure that its seals are intact, just keep changing the oil twice a year, and all will be well.

The filter won't wear out, but the valve can and does.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

According to BMW the entire unit is a service item NOT just the cyclonic oil separator, which is part of the PVC system, in other words the entire cartridge is a service item, however as you said Wuzerk, in our cars it is not necessary, it has been discussed before, in my case the unit has been on the car for 14 years, I have only changed the wollen/paper filter to the plastic cyclonic type including the seals.
