What job are you tackling ? The driveshafts are best left undisturbed if removing the hub or hub/strut assembly for any wheel bearing/suspension work. Remove the driveshaft hub nut (very tight- need a long breaker bar) and then pull the hub off the drive shaft splines to free it (it should come off easily- use few taps on the end of the shaft with a plastic, rubber or wooden hammer to get it moving if it will not come off).

not normally needed... like already said take the nut off, release the hub lower bolt and free the wishbone, then pull the hub towards you and NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- the shaft end with a soft hammer...

was notchy means is knackered... point blank...

Preload should mean not movement at all.... a few microns is enough for a rumble,,, a 16th would be in danger of locking up or collapse... replace it...

the bearing themselves are 20 quid for a quality one...

no, you will probably destroy it...

pull it out with a woodscrew and claw hammer and fit a new one...

Make sure the hole is really clean before refitting AFTER the bearing goes in (the right way round)...
