You're right there. I used a load of coke when I took my thermostat off. Skinned my hands all over the place and didn't feel a thing.

WD40, grease etc. Will only encourage dust and grit to stuck in the lock and wear it quicker.
Your best bet is a dry lube like graphite spray or even just rubbing a pencil over the key then running it in the barrel...
