Mot Emissions failure 1.8 ZT

Afternoon all.

I've just been asked by a friend if I've any advice regarding his 2004 ZT 1.8. It's failed it's mot on excess emissions on the fast idle. His mechanic has told him there's nothing that can be done...... I somehow doubt that.

I don't know much about the car really other than it was bought as a cheap hack a couple of years ago but he's become quite attached to it. So, any thoughts how the emissions can be lowered. My initial reaction is a service, fuel system cleaner and 'Italian tuneup', possibly lambda sensors?

The bit that concerns me though is the mechanics notion that he couldn't do

Easy way to beat that test in one word CATACLEAN get it almost any automotive retailer even at eurocarparts pop it in the tank rev it hard and then pop it straight on the analyser

I had a citroen bx diesel years ago mot said engine knackered and about £700 to fix because emissions were sky high, uncle said it was bull, took it a hoofing then re mot'd and it past no problem at all, the mot tester tried to test it cold but was a moron anyway
