Default Motherboard/ Bios Battery

If the M/B battery was failing, could that affect the running of a PC ?
ie: slowing it down?
It is something I have wondered about while trying to pinpoint a fault.

No the battery is there as a backup to keep your BIOS settings, once the machine has power, even in standby it's not required.

Short answer is no. The CMOS battery is only there to keep the BIOS clock running and any changes to the default BIOS settings saved. (So a PC with a dead battery will have a clock that resets every time it shuts down, and you won't be able to save BIOS changes after power off).

However, given that the CMOS battery does play a part in BIOS settings, it is possible that some/all have been reverted to manufacturer's defaults which could cause slow performance (but is quite unlikely).

1) Diagnosing PC faults without seeing it is notoriously difficult.
2) A flat BIOS battery can affect performance, eg turning off hyperthreading, slowing down memory access, etc.
3) If spyware detection using Malwarebytes or Superantispyware fails to find anything, then if the computer is more than 3 years old, I always suspect hard disk problems. Run the manufacturer's hard disk diagnostics, followed by a full checkdsk. Most times, this fixes a slow computer. But I refer you to (1) !

Have you tried running CCleaner it does get rid of a lot of junk that is not needed.I run it about once a fortnight to help keep mine clean and to help it run a lot faster. It may take awhile the first time.Click on the windows and then where it says run cleaner. When that as done click Application and then click run cleaner

Will put a link belowe just run the free version.

Many slow PC problems are down to a clogged dusty fan and heatsink, you can normally tell straight away if you find that your fan is running high. Your CPU performance can be running at 100% as your fan is struggling to cool its processor and all vital components are overheating (similar to that of our K-series engine and its 18" fan).

PC's would last longer if the user/owner would just perform a simple and quick cleaning operation, this solves many a slow PC where the user once thought they had some sort of virus.

Your CPU fan may look like this...

Thanks for all the replies, I am aware of most of the problems.
I have a new machine on order and until I get that (6 to 10 days)
I don`t want to be pulling this apart, mainly because it behaves almost normal when surfing and looking into our forums.
It was cleaned out inside last year when I moved home.
one reason for asking about the M/B battery was that the computer clock
takes 52 seconds to travel 10
Apart from it "breaking down" all you PC geeks know what a challenge things can be and half of your thinking is disappointing but the other half enjoy`s a challenge.
It is time for an upgrade anyway, I built this tower myself and it would be 5 year old now.
Thanks.
Ken.
