Do I need a new MAP sensor?
The story so far - Had a high power momentary misfire on my 1.8T when accelerating at full throttle in 4th gear at about 4,000 rpm. Yes I like to have fun occasionally. Checked the ECU fault codes and found P0106 = MAP sensor out of range. I removed the sensor a few days later and found it was wet with what looked like engine oil. I am thinking this may indicate that the turbo is leaking oil into the inlet, although oil consumption is low and there is no blue smoke in the exhaust. My car has done 80,000 miles and is on the original turbo. I have always changed the oil every 12 months to prolong engine and turbo life. Any advice on what to do next would be appreciated.

Are you sure the boost control solenoid is working correclty? Or the the more common vacuum pipes that connect it to the wastegate? Causes overboost at around 4000rpm And the ecu cuts fuel to protect the engine, then will resume up to redline.

I have changed the boost control solenoid but it has not made any difference. The pipes are original and look OK with no deterioration visible. Would a defect in the solenoid or pipes give a P0106 fault?

Check carefully the wiring to where it enters the MAP sensor plug
Common fault on the 1800T, I have experienced this on several occasions. Brian |

It may be a worth a trip to the scrapyard to harvest a section of loom.
It doesn't have to be a 75 any MEMS3 K series engined car will do, 25 45 ZR ZS or Freelander Simply cut off a section of loom with a reasonable length, then connect using solder and heatshrink I don't know why the 1800T seems to suffer from this when the other cars don't Best of luck Brian |

Re wired and seems okay. Had a diagnostic, not t4 though and following error codes came up:
P0113 IAT sensor signal too large P0106 manifold absol/barometric pressure outside range P0500 vehicle speed sensor malfunction( weird as it clearly works) P1520 unknown but Google says O2 sensor high voltage. First too seem to be likely to be caused by the wiring fault, no idea why the speed one comes up and have no idea what p1520 means! Any further wisdom to share? Booked in for t4 on 9th with a guy Lates recommended so hopefully okay until then! |

Touch wood, seems sorted. No engine light and a bit of jiggling with the yellow connectors and no airbag light either. Just need to sort a FOC and spy hole mod the plenums, new rear brakes and should be able to start doing more exciting things like new long life or similar exhaust, better front seats and fitting a stereo! ( unless one of the error codes mentioned before is ominous)
Thanks for all the help and advice. |
