Hi I have a pair of diesel automatics. The tourer costs me £265 per year whilst the saloon is costing me £285. I am aware that neither amount is correct, but who am I to argue with the DVLA. I just pay my money and say thank you.

Old idea but I believe the tax should be put on fuel, then we all pay at a fair rate

Having a 4.6 litre V8 I'm quite happy with the current arrangement!

IMO road tax is an extremely unfair burden on owners of older cars. I just got a bill from DVLA for £305 for a year for my 2.5 auto. That's around £100 more than I pay for my fully comp insurance. Ridiculous!!! Considering the tax paid on fuel, and the amount of fuel my V6 uses, I'm already contributing a huge amount to the exchequer!!!! People should be encouraged to make cars last as long as possible instead of taxing the bejaysus out of them to encourage the purchase of a new car. I don't know the figures but the amount of carbon vented into the environment in the building of a new vehicle has got to be shocking.

I agree, the road tax (sorry, VED) is so unfairly proportioned. One can drive 50,000 miles a year and pay zero with a mega expensive car whilst I drive under 10,000 miles a year and pay nigh on £300. It would be much fairer to pay per mile, or failing that, as has been suggested, per litre of fuel used.
