I have 2005 Zt CDTi, does this mean I have the later type that doesn't use a filter and therefore doesn't need changing?

I'm not sure. The easiest way to check is to remove the filter and have a look. It's an easy task as long as you're careful with the injector leak-off pipe clips)

My understanding is that the filter is only there to catch oil droplets and oil vapour. In my experience in the diesel industry, cyclone type filters (in the later BMW 'PCV') can be just as effective as the foam element filters at catching the oil. Volatile gases are generally routed back into the intake (or recirculated) so that they can be burned and converted in to less harmful compounds. The foam element filter is no better at catching volatile gases than the cyclone filter.

I'm trying to remember stuff I did in my final-year project at uni on these devices, but that was a few years back now so I might be a bit rusty! I'll dig that stuff out when I get home...
Hi Simon
I think the filter roll is pretty good at catching the oil and gases.........that's why it gets bunged up!!
If these are changed as per the BMW schedule, there is no problem!
It's just that the schedule didn't get passed to MGR.

NO all 75 ZT's were fitted with the filter type?
The Cylone type only cam out in last 18 months.

thanks Jules, I'll have a look at changing it then, would you buy the whole thing from the ebay guy or just the filter?

still haven't got round to ordering some plenum drain from you, I'll get onto it this week.

They have been out longer than that, I bought and fitted one to a 330d I had 2-3 years ago.

Indeed. I have no problem with the foam filter. It does the job perfectly well, but it does need more regular replacing. Besides, I quite liked the idea of having a cyclone breather filter on my car because I'd investigated their use for my old employer and I wanted to experience it in action. Sad isn't it?

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the gases part though! I think both filters are as good (or bad ) as each other when in comes to catching gas.

I can't see what the old type unit 'filters' it is just a crankcase ventilation unit isn't the toilet roll,or the labyrynth on the later version, just there as a means to condense and drip back any heavy oil polution in the air which may otherwise build up in the wrong places causing a blockage in the pressure relief system

They filter out very well, the black gunge you see in the pic below.
The old one on the left is an OEM type filter fitted up to 2003 ish.
The early type had a thick cotton rope wound on the inside.

Middle one is 2003/2004 onwards.......... filter and are slightly smaller in diameter as they did away with the rope stuff.

Available in my shop and I will match any of the November eBay prices
