Default Fuel problems?

2004 75 1.8 connie 73000 miles.
Car normally runs beautifully.
Today car would not start, RAC came and said it was possibly fuel pump.
Car now at my local garage, will be looked at Monday, I have a courtesy car for 3 days per my RAC coverage.
Yesterday after filling up at Morrisons, later after about 10 miles driving I noticed the fuel guage had hardly moved. I stopped and after turning the ignition off and on about 4 times the petrol guage shot up and showed the correct amount in tank. I did a couple of errands no problems at all car ran beautifully.
Now, i ask, is it possible that the fuel i got was contaminated?
Perhaps someone else has had a similar problem.

Regarding the failure to start, it sounds as if you have fuel filter problems Anthony. There's lots of information on the forum about the self-loosening filter casing which reduces fuel pressure. Your pump won't be the problem.

The erratic gauge may be a fouled float mechanism. My advice would be to recover your car from the local garage and call out club trader Chris who is based near you in Portsmouth.

Good advice from Simon.
The filter assembly can come apart and as Simon rightly says the fuel pressure drops so the engine wont fire up. Reading between the lines many owners seem to have this issue after filling up, makes me think the petrol swirling around during filling may cause the seperation.
Look under FFS & Orange clip in the search on the top of the page when on the home page of the forum under "Forum Google search"

A search for FFS gives: https://cse.google.co.uk/cse?hl=en&c...ab=0&gsc.q=FFS

If it's that, you'll need to fit the Fabled Orange Clip. Get the garage to fit one or you'll soon be back.

Just had a call from the garage. He said he might have to take the tank out to find out what is going on. Fuel pump works ok gets to pressure then goes off, but no petrol present. I told him I would try to get any suggestions of help from here. I have sent a pm to trader Chris awaiting a reply. I am stuck now.

The tank doesn't need to come out to be worked on.... hatches under the rear seat base give access to everything you need.

Hmmmm.

Get it to Chris - if he is talking about removing the tank he's already out of his depth

This is exactly why I recommended that you reclaim your car and get Chris to look at it. As Rooney correctly says, your garage is already out of its depth.

No you're not Anthony. Chris will get back to you and you can work something out with him. Now pour yourself a glass of wine and put your feet up.

Just spoken with Tony, Thanks for the recommendation Simon.

I am not 100% familiar with the insides of the fuel tank on the petrols (only been inside 1 previously)

This thread is probably all your garage should need pointing towards
http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=58832

As said above, the fuel tank does not need dropping on these cars to get access to the internals of the fuel tank - it can all be accessed from underneath the back seat.

There is also a post on another thread which suggests fuel could be moved from one side to the other when the fuel filter starts to separate, which could explain your funny fuel gauge readings, before the failure to start (http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...4&postcount=10)

Hope you get sorted soon, but as discussed on the phone I am afraid I can't talk your garage through the job as I am not familiar with the inner workings of the petrol fuel tank, but am happy to come and have a look at this problem if your garage doesn't get anywhere with this.

(This web page should give a rough idea of what the parts inside the tank are laid out like :http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID001965, but lists the orange clip as no longer available)

Best of luck
Chris
