Failed PAS pump on V6
Hi
I think the power steering pump on my V6 has failed. It started making a whining noise on the way home tonight with notchy steering. The fluid in the reservoir was frothing. The pump is wet. I've done a bit of reading on the forum and have removed the pump. I've read about the leak from the gasket and also the o-ring (which has gone flat) on the inlet. Now that i have the pump in my hand I wonder if i should have replaced the o-ring in situ Or do you think that the gasket is the problem? |

I know where the leak is. I blocked the outlet and blew thro the inlet. It is the gasket and it's gone next to the inlet pipe. Just need to get some gasket paper now.

Give JayGee a ring John. They may well sell you the exact gasket you need. Alternatively, you might be tempted to have your pump professionally refurbished.

This morning i have cut a new gasket and fitted it with a wipe of Hylomar on both sides. Blew into it and no leak, which i would expect. The car is back together and system bled ok. No signs of leaking from the pump yet, but I'll take it for test drive and see if some load makes it fail again.
My local MOT garage gave me a piece of gasket material. Neither of the local parts shops had any!!!! To be fair they supply for trucks and i wouldn't do a repair like this on a truck in case it failed again on a trip. The old gasket looks like a piece of thin clear plastic approx 0.1mm, with elastomer on each side. I cleaned the old off and considered re-using it with a Hylomar sealant. So far I think that this could be temporary repair until i get a refurbished one. While i'm at it I'm draining the old engine oil and have started cleaning the lost PAS fluid. Thanks for the tip about JayGee |

The repair to the pump is still okay, but a front coil spring snapped this morning. I had a spare strut "in stock" and so have swapped it. I hope these things don't come in threes.
The hardest part is getting the strut back in the hub. is there an easy way of doing this? |
