Default Coolant level warning on display panel.

This afternoon I was out for a spin on the M20 and went over a bump in the road (actually a bridge expansion joint) and momentarily at exactly that moment the low coolant warning came up on the dash and lasted about a second then extinguished.
On checking the coolant level later there is no problem but I wondered what might have caused the warning to comeup. I put it down to a relay contact bounce or similar. The other point is that on checking the Haynes circuit diagrams I can't find any indication of a low coolant sensor.
Can anybody throw light on this and if so where is the sensor???

I see Jules did a thread on this on the 12th December 2009. It would appear there is no sensor, which is curious considering this afternoons experience!!!

All very strange as my handbook says the 'diesel only' has the low engine coolant warning light. !!!
As you say, "where is the sensor" ??

Default coolant level sensor

Hi,
As far as I'm aware, there isn't one.

I've recently spoken to Patrick of Sterling and he says that one is being developed, for the 75.

I guess the best thing is still to check your levels frequently.

Regards, Debbie.

Default Low Coolant warning on a diesel?

BMW put Low Coolant warning in the OBD software but didn't fit a sensor to the M47R. (R was designated by BMW for the Rover version)

The other M47 variants in BMW Cars did have the sensor so I'm told.

There will be gremlin/electronic spike (call it what you will) causing triggering of the Low Coolant circuitry.
Nothing to worry about it's such a rare occurance.

Mrs Jules has seen the warning on our Message display ONCE in 5 years.
Tsautos you are welcome to suggest to Mrs Jules she was mistaken for the Low Screenwash but I certainly believe her!
My life would not be worth living NOT to believe her.............believe me!!
Not only did she see the Radiator & Fan Symbol in Amber, it also came up in plain english on the message centre.

All I can say is that the warning that came up was exactly as shown in the handbook (engine block and in red).
Is it possible that they use this warning for the screen wash level as an alternative as there is no engine coolant level sensor???????

jules I said There is no coolant level sensor and there isn't.
The warning light may well be in the configuration as is self levelling but if there is no sensor to trigger it then the only thing to worry about is paranoia.
you will get lights that show on the ipk if fuses are put were they shouldn't be or when a configuration hasn't been done for new parts or upgrades

Jules/Tsautos,

Come on chaps this is getting a bit over the top.
Yes I have a full message centre as my car is all singing and dancing and this is not paranoia. I simply said that the low coolant sensor (indicator I should have said) came up momentarily and then went out and I was curious about others opinions on the event. I put my reason to it which is reasonably logical. I do not expect it to occur again in the near future, if ever, and I definitely ain't going looking at mythical misplaced fuses as these have never been touched since having the car and the only electrical upgrade has been a Synergy2. The car runs perfectly and has done since I bought it 2 years ago.
Also I don't see a low windscreen wash level indication because I never let it get that low but I might let it run down just for the hell of it!!!
