The charge light (a battery symbol?) was on for some time and initially didn't respond to throttle speed. Even after half-an-hour it was still flickering. The man at the garage thought it might be the alternator or a failing battery. If it had appeared on my v6 I would have felt some concern. It didn't look right but if it's just a feature of the v8 I'm happy to be persuaded.

Mine has been flickering all the time I have had it, and many others have the same symptom. It is widely believed to be a translation problem between the Rover software and the American ditto.

If you want peace of mind, just connect a voltmeter over the battery and rev the engine. If the voltage goes from something like 12.5 to about 13 or even 13.5V, your system is working. My guess is that that is the case.

But don't let that stop you from complaining to the seller and get a discount.

Oh and if you have a chance, get the car.

They are worth it.

My battery light sometimes stays on when I start up. I just switch off, remove the key, and start again. It goes out then.

I remember the first time I saw the battery light pop up, I was advised it was a feature exclusive to the V8s!

It's the "heartbeat"

Seriously though you could convert this to Contemporary spec quite easily, the only issue being the gear selector trim, everything else is standard.

As I was discussing this very thing with a chap who owns a Starlight Silver Connie SE V8 last night, the suggestion was one of having the gear surround hydrodipped.

Another alternative in the case of wishing to convert to black oak, would be to simply flat down the gear surround, paint it black, sponge some grey bits on then lacquer it.

Sounds a bit Heath Robinson, but surprisingly good results were obtained on 880 when converting from Technical Grey to Light Oak.

As an aside, the chap I was speaking to last evening was wanting to go from Light Oak to Walnut, so if you do end up with this car, I can pass on his detail s to you, if you were interested in a part exchange for a Light Oak gear surround

Thank you all for your assistance.

Apropos changing the interior to a Contemporary appearance. I have refitted my tourer with Contemporary seats etc but left the dash as is. Looks ok, although not as complete as my "proper" saloon. The greatest inconvenience I found is changing the door cards.

Looking further into the options of v8 ownership. I hadn't appreciated that even this model had a variety of specifications. The viewed car is a middling specification. However still tempted. I have driven automatics for many years, is the v8 manual box a bit of a pain to use?

One further question: are Meteor wheels suitable for the v8?

P.s. Drove past my tourer the other day and thought "that's a nice car". Completely forgetting I owned it.

The manual box in the 260 is a wee bit agricultural, OK when you get used to it. There is a long throw and its best to change gears slowly, trying to hurry it through the box isn't really appreciated!

Rover 75 V8 = Automatic
MG 260 = Manual
Apart from a very few specials.

Seven MG260's were made in auto for the Australian market. Some references say nine were made in auto.
