Question Car Ramps Advice required.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAR-RAMPS-...item5d310d61f3

Hi all - Looking for some decent car ramps and seen these on the bay. Any thoughts?

Also my car is an 2.5 AUTO and I have never tried to put an auto on ramps. Any recommendations, or should I go for a Quality Trolley jack and decent axle stands.

Cheers

An auto is easier to get up ramps than a manual. Those ramps look OK, but regarding the jack or ramps.....

A jack has a different purpose to ramps. Ramps are good for oil changes and other work which doesn't involve any wheel work. For anything which needs your taking a wheel off you need a jack, plus probably axle stands to be able to work safely - definately you do if itending going under it.

I don't find those small jacks very much use - they don't lift the car high enough to do any serious work on a car, just about OK for changing wheels, brake pads etc..

For any serious work it needs to be lifted high and the only thing able to do that safely is a small garage size jack. I paid around £55 for mine new 15 years ago and it was well worth it.

With both ramps and jack, you can run one end up on ramps and lift the other end with a jack - makes exhaust fitting etc. much easier. With a good jack and 4x axle stands you can do similar.

What ever you spend on these sort of things, they soon repay you in money saved by not needing to pay labour charges at a garage.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Almost any ramps will do but you will probably need to make the run up longer due to the overhang at the front, dont think there is anywhere to jack up from the front or rear without the risk of damage.

There is a bracket, which shows below the engine under panel at the front - that is a good lifting point to lift the entire front end of the car on. It is not easy to see, so I painted mine white to make it easier to find with the jack cup.

There are lifting points at the rear too, though I no longer use them. I have a towbar fitted and use that to lift the entire rear.

In addition, you can lift the car under the sills at the usual jacking points.
