I find by far the easiest way is to right click the photo and select edit. This should, on a windows system, open the photo in Paint, if not then you need to select Paint as your editor. For example my Avatar photo is 100 pixels wide by 74 pixels deep. Which seems to be about the right size for reducing a photo by about 90%.

Most of the photos I use on the forum have been resized this way, this for example is 800 x 600



Don't forget to use 'Save As' when saving and giving the resized photo a different name otherwise it will overwrite the original.

Sounds complicated reading it but is very simple in practice.
