Default Not a nice sight

Not a nice sight to witness whilst waiting to taxi for take off, but this is what happened this morning at Malta International Airport.

A twin engined plane with 5 people on board crashed within the airport boundary soon after taking off.
Passengers onboard an aircraft waiting to taxi witnessed the full events. All five aboard were killed, they were part of a French surveillance exercise.

The airport fire service were on site within minutes and put the flames out and the airport was closed to all traffic for four hours with flights diverted to Sicily.

More information arising from yesterday's tragic plane crash at MIA.

The plane involved was a Fairchild Metroliner which is a twin turbo prop 19 seat pressurised craft and it was used for surveillance presumably for illegal people smuggling in the Mediteranian.
It appears to have lost complete power just after take off but this type of aircraft has a poor record having been involved in a large number of accidents, the last one in Mexico in 2014 which was very similar to yesterday's crash as it too crashed on take off.

Yesterday's accident happened right on the boundary fence just yards from a popular view point for plane spotters just across the runway from the main terminal building. I was at that very same spot just earlier this year taking some photographs.

A passing motorist caught it on his dash cam and another passenger on board an aircraft waiting to taxi also caught the aftermath of the crash.
Google Malta News for the links.
