Depends what sort of level you want to start with, Andy!

I'd suggest going for something secondhand, and if it's your first SLR, worth looking at the likes of a Nikon D3100 and Canon EOS 1000D.

However, you could go for the likes of a Nikon D200 or D300, secondhand, for not much more, which is metal-bodied, and feels a lot more expensive. Try some in a local electrical retailer, then buy a secondhand equivalent!

Cool

I use a Nikon D5000 with interchangeable lens. T'other camera is a Canon Sureshot which is a compact.
Depends how serious you are and what you want it for.

A good used model can be a very good place to start. Then you can upgrade if and when you know what you really want. I have a Pentax DSLR which is great, and I am thinking of changing to Sony mirror-less.

If this is your 1st DSLR I would say get a used Nikon, or an entry level new Nikon. Many other good brands around that are equally as good.

So knowing if you want

New or used

Price range

Any other info as to use. Like sports, macro, kids, wildlife, aircraft or even things like being able to use old lenses.

All this info may lead to better advice.

I bought a Nikon D3100 as my starter DSLR and it's been brilliant.
As a keen but, definite amateur it has been quite easy to use and understand. Good online support from Nikon too, plus I found one of those bookzine things in WHSmiths all about Nikon DSLRs.
I've achieved some good results with it so far but, still learning.

I'd fully recommend the D3100 but, that's speaking as a complete novice

Is the budget £500 for the camera or for the camera plus a lens or more?

To be honest there are no real duffers out there, what you may want to think about is if you get hooked and want to buy more lenses you will likely stay with one brand.
It's worth looking into the future to see what offers you the upgrades you may wish to go for.

Ps, I'm a Canon 7D shooter just to balance against the other boys on this thread

Just to add, if your shooting cars and aircraft indoors you will want a fairly fast lens and a camera with good ISO noise control

As in flying in the sky aircraft ?

That may alter your lens selection and maybe focusing will be of interest. Luckily we have a few experts at aircraft photography here.

I am not one of them

we started with a nikon D40x then went to a D3100 and it does all that we want, just bought a nikon 18-300mm lens that cost 3 times more than the D3100 (it was second hand)
