Default Bigger tyres for 17" wheels?

Hi guys

Looking to get some tyres for 17" wheels but want as much comfort out of them as possible. What's the biggest size tyres I can get away with? Are standard 225/45/17? They look like small profiles. Can I get bigger? Thanks.

Ideally you need to keep to the right size tyre in order to keep the rolling radius the same.
This keeps your speedo accurate.

I've never had an issue with comfort on a 225/45/17 tyre.

Hi,
I've got 17" meteors on 225/45/17 and wanted more 'comfort', I believe Rover fitted 215/50/17 on Mk2 to try and achieve this but they cost about £40 each more.
I hadn't realised that many tyres now are 'XL' rated (94 load rating) and I found on my car I had 3 XL and 1 std which didnt help. XL tyres carry the extra load as they have heavier steel bracing thus less flexible.
The handbook quotes the tyre load rating as 91H i.e. standard not XL.
I have just replaced my fronts with Goodyear Efficientgrip 225/45/17 91W which I am well pleased with, they are A rated in wet, C rated on fuel & only 69db, cost £75ish each so for my style of motoring tick all the boxes. Just need to get rears worn down now so I can get them off.

I have 225/50/17 on my Meteors on my mk1. Transformed the cars comfort, looks and road noise.
215/50/17 on my latest project contemporary se look good as well but will be fitting the 225s next time.
