Mine does that too. Without the temple thing, I can open the door from 1 meter only. My car has always been like that (had her since new...). I found it a nice feature as I always check the blinking alarm light before pressing on the fob.

Remember that the receiver on the early ones is situated down by the handbrake, so there are blind spots. Even standing close up to the back door fails to work, but there is good range from afar. Mine works from inside the house, through the closed house door, a straight 7 yards, round a right angle, reflected from a caravan side, then another 3 yards. I do this every night, just to make sure I havent forgotten to lock up ! . Its great to see the reflection of the lights flashing ....... And its a June 1999 model too . .

OH and thats without cooking my brains with the temple thing .

Cowley cars have the reciever unit on the transmission tunnel, Longbridge cars have the reciever unit behind the instrument pack.

The reciever unit was improved and the frequency changed from 315 Mhz to 433 Mhz

I've thought of relocating mine on the V6 to see if it improves things as it's a real pain compared to the Tourer.
