Hi Rod.
I have had another look at your pictures, would you be so kind as to have a go at cleaning up the commutator, cut some strips of emery paper medium grade onto 10mm width and 20cm lengths, pull this round the commutator in a sawing action and see what it come up like, once cleaned scrape out the thin lines with a sharp pointed tool and post a pic up cheers Arctic

Unhappy

Hey guys,

No go on your suggestion,

I sent some new pics off to one of my good friends who is a sparkie of great merit, here's some of his reply on the new pics:

Quote:
* I am able to make a much better judgment and comment on the fan motor, now that I have seen much closer up shots of it..........its all summed up in Pic 04 - I can now see copper wire separating from the comm segment <> Pic 06-insulation material is badly cracked and separating from the com <> Pic 10 - shows a similar view <> Pic 16 says it all ... the industrial grade high temp cement that binds the copper armature bars to the armature core , is badly cracked .... sadly these are all signs of excessive wear, possibly due to prolonged high temp running, and is a mechanical failure, not electrical.
Quote:
* Even if there was actually enough copper to machine back, the armature would live a very short life after repairs, so please don't throw away good money after bad, I can see there is no other way out of it, other than replace.
Very hard to find used ones here. If I was lucky enough to find a 2 wire fan is there much problem with retro fitting to my 4 wire job?

Also does the fan unit only fit the 2.5 KV6 or can I find one from any of the engine sizes available?

Right now my wife is cursing the car as such, that your ears would turn to charcoal.

This is the best option for you.

Not for your electrician friend.

The 1.8 engines used a lower power version, but it would work.
The KV6 and diesel used the higher 450 watt motor. You cannot use a diesel control box on your car.
Arctic can best advise you if you're thinking of buying a unit from a 1.8.

I guess with the suggestions you guys have given, it will help me nail something down. What do you guys know of non OEM stuff, are there any I could put on my list (here I am thinking I'm going to have a massive list ) or should I avoid them at all costs?

Hi Rod.
I had a quick look how much it would cost to send a commutator / fan to Australia nearly £100 it looks like you will have to source one closer to home.

You could always try Jules to see how much it would cost to have a Revotec fan link below

Hi Rod.
Did you ever get this sorted out ? like I said above I had one I could of sent you but for the cost, shame you were not in the UK i have one of each fan for our cars, 1.8, 2.0, 2.5, and M47 i am sure in the next couple of months we will be seeing threads on fan issues again once the weather warms up.

Anyways please do let us know your outcome cheers Arctic
