This one photograph sums up their approach nicely John. Spare a thought for those who don't know one end of a screwdriver from another. What chance do they stand?
Without wishing to sound unnecessarily negative, don't pin your hopes on Ombudsmen. I've had experience of them. The legal odds are stacked against you I'm afraid, even though you are clearly morally right. Simon

The garage has a good local reputation and I'm hoping that they won't want to risk too much bad publicity.
I'm an eternal optimist. Worst case, I go through small claims court. Doesn't cost much and they hopefully won't want the hassle of taking it that far.

You could, yes; but bear in mind that the Court will rely on the engineer's report. So if it's convincing, that would be a better option for you than the Ombudsman.
