Not sure if it's appropriate as we are only an hour and a half from LHR and two hours from Gatwick but we would always use an "Airport Cars" service as we find the cost is only marginally more than driving ourselves and the cost of parking - but the convenience of being dropped off and picked up is just so great we would do it this way even if the cost was significantly more.

However - 3 hours to Manchester may be significantly different.

I've used these http://www.mhairportparking.co.uk/ a couple of times and nothing bad has happened, I wouldn't leave my Ferrari there but a Rover - if you are leaving/arriving in the middle of the night though apparently they aren't up to much. To be honest I prefer to get a taxi there and back as it's not that much different in price - but then I only live half an hour away

What £280 more than your fuel and car parking? That is a lot.

When we last flew from LHR it worked out about £75 more for us.

I won't bore you with the details but I prebooked parking at Manchester a few years back.

I parked in the wrong car park. Upon my return I was asked for £450 as I tried to exit, which was dropped to £250.

Some very choice words on the trip home indeed.

Take care to get the right car park. I will never set foot there again.

We parked in a car park out with Manchester airport about 20 years ago. All seemed well with the exception of handing over the keys. We were only away for six days and the car had done 7 miles and nearly half a tank of petrol. Also the car was filthy, I took pictures and went to a solicitor and eventually I got compensation and the solicitor got his fee. Never again would I use these parking thieves

Have you checked to see if any taxi businesses have a regular mini bus run, some do.
Look up local taxi firms within a reasonable distance to airport) tell them you need safe parking and that you would use their firm for the rest of journey, people need business, you might strike it lucky.
If you decide on long term with the airport check that you might have to book for that.
Good luck.
