Placebo IMO

I only do c3k miles a year; only did 998 miles in my M5 last year!

I do use Shell VPower in that as it's tuned to 98RON minimum!

However, I used standard fuel in my daily BMW 5 series and currently in my ZT V6 and use about 1 in 4/5 tanks of Shell VPower just for it's cleaning capabilities etc

The engines are tuned to 95RON, putting higher RON fuel in really doesn't make that much of a difference to economy; but the cleaning additives to help them to run quieter IMO

I was doing 470 miles a week in my ZT V6 160... you should have seen my fuel bills then Needless to say I rarely did above 60mph on the motorway or I'd be bankrupt by now.

Currently, I'm doing 360 miles a week in my 75 CDTi and even with a heavy foot, using the FBH and doing the speed limit-ish I'm still getting 45mpg on cheapo supermarket fuel. When this tank is empty I'm going to try some premium diesel and see if it makes any difference, other than to my bank balance of course!

As for narrow gaps, be careful if you ever use the Royal Hallamshire Hospital car park, I managed to unclip one corner of the front bumper once on the way in

The alloys had just been refurbed and looked stunning! Went into the first Shell garage I could find en route home and caught one of the alloys driving away from the pumps in the very narrow lanes ......
Now that must have really hurt.

That's exactly why I went straight to the refurbishers the same day. I'd had the set of Serpents in storage for the best part of 9 years (!) and just got around to having them refurbished only last summer. Although the damage was relatively trivial it would drive me potty knowing it was there.

I believe that if you use 97 Ron, the engine alters to recognise the fact.

ECUs have some sort of learning capability, but not that much

They need to be programmed to utilise higher RON fuel...

In 14 years driving 75's I never kerbed a wheel once ! But

Within days of getting the XF I managed to kerb them twice and since then all four have been kerbed at various times even with the missus.
Those 19 " Carelias' just love kerbs.

I'm going to get all four powder coated this spring as we've now got used to parking the car well out from the kerb.

I'm sorry I should have explained better.
In my 416 on ordinary fuel after driving from my home in Sheffield to Watford gap services, 83/84 miles, my fuel gauge was about an 8th of an inch off full (12 o'clock).
After changing to premium the fuel gauge was about a millimetre off full.
I had more fuel left for the same distance therefore I was getting more miles for the fuel.
My fuel gauge appeared to stay on full for a very long time before dropping more quickly towards empty.
It also showed almost full going uphill and almost empty going down hill when the pointer was at 9 O'clock on level ground.
Idiocincratic .. Idiosincratic .... Idiosynchratic .... oh I give up!
Rover fuel gauges have their own personalities
Now, if it does that with a 416 I would expect it to happen with a 75. But I am no mechanic.

I would be very interested in your thoughts when you have tried this. I do get marginally more mpg on premium diesel but that is not the main reason why I use it. I use it because the engine runs quieter and smoother. The diesel clatter on cold start up is much reduced IMO.
