I'm so glad I am a Luddite! I don't have a PC so lots of these email thingies go to the trash email box thingy!

If you adopt a few basic rules, you can cut down the chances of being caught by the range of devious scammers out there:
  • ALWAYS have anti-virus software on your computer - and ALWAYS keep it up-to-date; anti-spyware helps too.
  • NEVER open a file attached to an email unless you are 110% certain it is from a trusted source
  • NEVER click on links contained in unknown emails - some of the scammers even lay a trap by saying "click here to be removed from our mailing list" - that one click can in itself allow a bug into your computer
  • NEVER allow the so-called 'Microsoft Help Desk' scammers (or anyone else who says they can help you on-line) to have access to your PC - unless you give them that access, they can't get at your machine.
  • NEVER respond to out-of-the-blue requests from banks, Paypal, credit card companies etc. to 'update your details' - ring the apparent sender and find out of they really have sent the request
  • NEVER give out any of your passwords on the telephone
  • NEVER input more than the usual number of digits requested for your on-line passwords - i.e. if you are normally asked for a random 4 digits, and then suddenly it asks for ALL the digits - it's a scam and could be a symptom of a key logger bug in your computer
There are members of this Club who are far more technically qualified than me to advise on security - and adopting the above won't make you immune to scams and viruses - but it will cut down dramatically on the chances of you being caught out
