Default cheaper TV/broadband options

Currently with Virgin Media, we have a tivo plus box in the front room and
tivo box in the kitchen.

Dont need sport channels, dont really watch films, the Tivo box is very slow, particularly when linking to Iplayer etc, and we are paying a lot of money monthly for the set up.

both televisions are about 9 years old, have HDMI inputs but no USB sockets or anything like that.

I have a laptop but its about 17 years old, so anything computer based isnt an option.

Id need recording facilities or catch up ability in the front room but can live without it in the kitchen.

Im a complete technophobe when it comes to anything like this.

Just wondering what the best/cheapest option is, do I get those plug in stickl type things, do they even plug into the hdmi socket or would I need to upgrde the tellys or do I just go back old school and go with a freeview box in the kitchen nd a freeview recorder in the front room ?
