I have Nikon and Canon. Both were purchased brand new in 2009/2010 through Jessops, a reputable company and I managed to secure a £100 voucher and a 24 month warranty on the Nikon.
Jessops are running bundle deals on Nikon and Canon DSLR's which include the standard lens + a 300mm and if you don't include an accessory pack, either should just about fit into your budget. Having said that, more features will command a higher price tag. http://www.jessops.com/online.store/...8015/show.html Neither Canon or Nikon are currently running cash back offers.... I am keeping an eye out for special offers and prices as I am toying with the possibility of upgrading the Canon. Be lucky! |

Fingers crossed I have been! I won an auction on eBay last night for an "as new" Nikon D5500. Should be arriving mid-week, so hoping it's as good as described!

That should be just the job. With kit lens?
Good sensor in that I think. Last edited by Rocket; 19th February 2017 at 15:55.. |

I very nearly bid on one that had a fixed 50mm as a replacement - quite probably a good lens but I need a zoom! I've read a review (Which? magazine) which suggests that the images have an "orange cast" but a) Have never read this elsewhere b) If it was really bad I can't imagine they'd have kept selling them c) If it does have the cast and is unacceptable, I can always sell it!

All the reviews I can see say it is a cracking camera for the price. So I don't think you could have got anything better in that price range.
You can add lenses and stuff later if you get the urge as that sensor is capable of great sharpness and dynamic range. The camera seems very well specified in most other areas. I like to compare photography to cooking. You can have the best ingredients, pans and stove but it does not mean you can cook (me in particular) but it helps a skilled cook produce better food. |

First things first: Initial impressions are good. It's nice and neat, light, very clean, the touchscreen works very well (no user manual but intuitive) and the SmartPhone app is great fun! However..... The original advert stated "Rarely used" in the sub-header and then went on to state "Practically brand new, only used a few times! Love the touch screen only selling as I rarely use it other than that it is in amazing condition" It certainly looks little used and seems to work for everything I've tried so far, but I've run a shutter count on it and it's coming back as, wait for it... 14052 That doesn't sound "rarely used" to me! So, now I have a quandary. It's here, I've paid for it with PayPal, left positive feedback on eBay, so what do I do? Part of me thinks it's been mis-sold as clearly it is well used, but the other part thinks it was a good price (£440) and as it works well, and still has 85,948 shutter actuations left, I should just accept it Not sure how many photos I take per year as the old DSLR (Canon 350D) doesn't appear to have any way of counting.... But say I do 100 a week, that's 5000 or so a year, and thus about 17 years of life left in the Nikon Should I worry? I don't know! Why is nothing straightforward?
