I agree it is annoying.
I know (of) someone who does that, their attitude is if it bothers others they should look away.

Guilty as charged as I have an automatic. I will in future try to remember and put it in neutral, handbrake on. By the way I don't (or try not to) drive at night as I can't stand HiD headlights or Zenons when not adjusted. HiD's are the worst especially on 4 x 4's as the headlights are high up and they always blind me when hitting even the slightest bump. I think they should be banned. Utility vehicles or hiD's, don't mind which.

Hi,

As a newbie here but with several decades of motoring on 2 wheels (both boy powered and petrol powered) and 4 wheels I'm loving this thread so thought I'd add my twopenneth.

I'll agree with pretty much everything already mentioned.

My pet hate at the moment - although it's a bit off topic - is coming back down the M1 from the north east. In some sections there's 4 lane running with new overhead gantries/signals.

It's usually 8PM or so and time after time there's a "Workforce in Road" sign, then speed restrictions and lane closures.

Unfortunately there absolutely no sign whatsoever of any workforce. No vehicles, no orange flashing lights, no cones, no people, no hi-viz, nothing. Now maybe there're getting ready or are on their way but this goes on for miles and miles and miles.

I thought the idea of the new signals was for "real time" information?

The trucks take absolutely no notice whatsoever. So the scenario is a line of trucks in Lane 1 doing 60 and a line of cars in Lane 4 doing 50.

IMHO that's dangerous.

Please, please, please motorway traffic control if there's something to tell us do so, if there isn't then don't because if creates a "cry wolf" mentality and then there will be carnage at some point and who would have thought it!

With all the erm..."questionable" driving styles out there I've fitted both front and rear dashcams in the car (thanks for the instructions & pics ).

It's quite interesting to see the reactions of a tailgater when they actually notice the camera and invariably back off .

I think there's a bigger social issue around the perceived "right" to do what I want, how I want and when I want and tuff for anyone else. The lack of effective enforcement just helps that view along.

Fortunately there are those that buck this trend and I've already read of many friendly, selfless actions by members on here - thank you for restoring my faith in people.

As a former motor racing marshal one of the pearls of wisdom from the more experienced was:

You're in a great deal more danger when the accident comes to you.

Be defensive and safe - collisions hurt.

All the best.

Andy.

It shouldn't be more than 56 mph in most cases.

Interesting thread and my 10 p's worth..

Brake lights at traffic lights at night, these days rear lights are quite big and can dazzle the car behind..it is covered as a question in the theory test and quite right.

Leaving an automatic in drive when stood can eventually damage the gearbox. Neutral and hand brake better.

Learners are taught not to use indicators while pulling out to pass parked vehicles in case this is taken as intention to turn right or use left indicate when passed the parked vehicle in case it's taken as intention to stop or turn left.

The big one for me and you see it every day, drivers reversing using door mirrors in supermarket car parks, they will run a small child over one day.

Taxi drivers who think they are fantastic drivers in fact most of them are a danger to all road users..

Back on track the MOT thing about covers makes no sense..

Temporary Traffic Lights, or TTLs.

They drive me up the bloomin' wall!

I agree with the use of handbrake, in manual or auto.

I give a brief signal, if I have to pull out wide, especially if there is traffic coming towards me as a warning to them.

Reversing on mirrors is sometimes the only way, especially in a van and the 75 - because mirrors show more than looking.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Legal limit is 60, but many companies set the speed limiter on these vehicles to 56mph for economy.

I believe the 56 thing was an EU initiative.

All the companies l work for set at 56 or less. A couple 52 though one reset back to 56 as the Purfleet/Warrington trunks were often not getting back in the legal driving time.
You'll see very few lorries cruising at 60 (unless downhill), hardly any at all. Even the continental trucks are mostly down to the mid-fifties now. Some of the Irish wagons can still press on but it's a relative rarity.

Can anyone tell me how a difference of 4MPH would actually work?
