I think I need a bigger zoom and a tripod...

Looks like a good effort. What lens was it?

If it was an entry level 70-200 zoom or similar I reckon you have done about as well as you can. The bridge cameras with long zoom lenses do quite well for moon shots but many go to 600mm equivalent (or more)

Many experts say 400mm (or more) is really needed to get decent shots.
Of course the quality of the lens and sensor come into play also. Easy to spend thousands of pounds to get an interchangeable lens camera and lens to get a really good moon pic.

Good shot

Nice photo Phil

Last year both Nikon and Canon patented a 1" sensor and a lens capable of 100X magnification. Nikon are the leaders in the Superzoom bridge range with the P900 and its 83X magnification optical zoom, equivalent to 2,000mm plus. You might be able to pick up a bargain whilst you are there without having fork out extra on the VAT. The Canon Powershot I use has 40X magnification and does some reasonable moon shots without having to do any crops. As a travel camera, it's convenient.

I found Tokyo expensive when was I there to do a Medi-vac, but the people and the culture is fascinating. How is your trip going?

I have been working on a composition of 3 photos to make the moonshot look more interesting, mysterious and surreal, with day into night using a blue filter.

Thanks guys.
I am using a Canon 700D with a Tamron 18-200 stabilised lense.
I think I need to save up for another, more powerful lense but it's hard to justify when the 18-200 does almost everything I could ever wish for.

I am still learning the ropes as prior to my DSLR, I only ever used my phone camera.
I took lots of pictures in Japan with varying degrees of success..
I had hoped to be able to practice more before I left but unfortunately, owing to the lovely UK weather it wasn't really possible.

Japan was awesome and I was really sad to come home. I will definitely be going again.

Your moon shot is awesome, what camera and lense did you use?

Welcome back Phil

You could think about adding a lens doubler to your existing 200mm @ x 1.5 or x 2.0 magnification - not everyone's cuppa, but it is a cheaper option. I have one in my kit. There is less light coming into the camera body, so one has to compensate in the set up via the usual settings, ISO, f and sec. I was able to double the Tamron 300mm to 600mm for not very much using a Jessops high quality generic fit.

Thank you Phil for the compliments

Here is a review of the camera I used for the moon photo. I am often self critical and think that I could have done better with clarity, had I used a timer and a tripod

Great shot that extra reach of the 150- 500 sure helps. And not taken with a mirrorless or a DSLR but an SLT

Ta. I really like the lens except it weighs a flippin' ton (probably why they are a bargain price).
