Rear Hub Nut size
I plan to take my rear hub off at the weekend to sort out my ABS sensor and also check the condition of the reluctor wheel.
I bought a new hub in case it is needed, and separately purchased a hub nut from here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=130844151344 According to Rimmers list the front and rear hub nuts are all the same so I assumed this one was OK, but when it arrived it is 36mm instead of 32mm. All its other dimensions are the same. Would you use it? |

No reason to replace it, provided you carefully unstake it before removal Brian |

That's good news Brian, thanks. Worth other members noting that the ebay outfit are flogging wrong size nuts, not worth sending it back, so just chalk it up to experience. |

Here is the reply I got from the vendor above: Hi Please check the thread size not the socket size, any problems let us know, regards J&R - j_r2006 The thing is, the 36mm one they sent me does actually look stronger and perfectly suitable for the job, just a pain because I bought a 6 sided 32mm socket in preparation. The thread size and the nut height is the same, only the socket size differs. hub nut.JPG Last edited by David Lawrence; 20th February 2013 at 20:45.. |

Advice is to replace stake nuts, a bit like nyloc nuts etc, however if unstaked carefully, a stake nut can be re used. Further to this the previously "staked" part provides a perfect datum, as aligning the mark with the machined groove in the stub axle will ensure a proper torque setting. Brian |

I think I may have found the reason why the shop supplied me with a 36mm socket sized one, and that is that the part code of CDU1534 is common to Landrover Discovery 2's, and it seems that for LandRovers they now supply 36mm ones. I bought a CDU1534 from a completely different store which turned up today in a LandRover package, and once more 36mm !!!! As you can see from the photo earlier, the threaded part is exactly the same, the staked part is exactly the same, only the socket size is bigger. would have been great if I hadnt bought a 32mm socket, but other than that it looks perfectly up to the job. The one that came with my new hub is 32mm, so it seems that if you really want a 32mm one then make sure you buy it with a complete hub kit, and if you want to just buy a new nut to refit an old hub then order it by size and not by part code as you're more than likely getting 36mm instead. |

I just changed a rear hub and bought a 36mm socket in case the new hub came with a 36mm nut. It did but the 36mm socket will not fit inside the hub so I have temporarily re-used the original 32mm nut. The OD of the 36mm socket is about 0.5mm bigger than in ID of the hub! I wondered if I could grind it down but it is an impact socket so probably very tough and I may end up spoiling it. I will see if I can borrow a standard 36mm socket off a friend.
