Default The smell revealed...

A couple of times while out in the V6 I have noticed a smell coming in through the heater - obviously something going in the engine bay, but definitely not oil burning.

I popped the bonnet but couldn't see a lot because of the cover, but there was a light mist of something oil coloured on the alternator near the cover.

I wasn't sure if this was related, but I was quite worried because the smell reminded me of another car many years ago that turned out to have head gasket issues.

I did a search on the KV6 and weird engine bay smells, and discovered a post about brittle breathers. Off came the cover this morning to reveal that in two places the connectors are no more, and the pipes are just flapping around aimlessly! It is what I can see blowing on the alternator!

I am so relieved its such a simple fix, and will be ordering the part after I get home from the hospital. it looks really straightforward, so I should be able to do that even while recovering! Well pleased!

Good for you that you have solved your weird smell.

For a moment I was thinking that you had found a dead critter hiding underneath.

I think the arms are made in India - I ordered a new one and inside all the packaging was a poor little house gheko. He'd done a bit of travelling!

I once got back to my car and heard a noise from under the bonnet. It was a kitten that had got itself trapped! I'm glad that I hadn't just driven off or it could have been roasted kitty!
