First MOT not for Four Years?

Obviously not for our vehicles, but with another year before the first MOT that means that the idiots who never check their light bulbs will have another year to torment other road users........ (it's under consideration)

According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)

January 2016 figures show that around 40% of new vehicles fail their MOT at the first attempt.

I'd place a bet on the majority of failures at first not are daft things like bulbs, tyres and wiper blades. It seems more and more people rely on the annual mot to fix these problems rather than check/replace themselves. I wonder if the rise of pcp's and lease deals have contributed to this? Folk don't see a car as anything more than a throw away commodity these days.

I would say the vast majority of cars pass their first mot. Pass rate depends on what you work on, main dealers will have a low fail rate due to servicing and preventative maintenance. Once cars get to about 6 or 7 years old service history isn't as important which is when issues aren't picked up on before the mot. An independent working on cars 6 years and older will have a lower pass rate.

Yes taxis have their own set of testing carried out by the council.

The psv test is almost identical to the mot though - it's pretty much the MOT plus checking there's an appropriately placed fire extinguisher and that the extinguisher is in working order. Don't know how much the fees vary in England, but there's real resentment in Northern Ireland because they charge £100 more for a psv than an mot

Looking at the Gov statistics, I notice that the motorcycle failure rate is around 12% bit different than the 47% for cars.
