Question Kenwood Head Unit - SWC??

I have an aftermarket kenwood unit but it does not work with infra red, so the SWC does not work with it.

However, whilst looking for some other wiring in the centre console, I found these wires, which I am told are for steering wheel controls.

my loom on my head unit had a wire for steering wheel controls and looks like this

The headunit is this one:

What do I need to get the SWC working with this?

Cheers,

Dave

You need an Autoleads PC99-X39 adapter lead with a PC99-KEN patch lead.

is it just those? I remember reading a thread where it mentioned needing an incartec thingy? which also required some wiring near the steering wheel :/

Thanks for the info guys but now I am confused. I've already shelled out on a headunit and looks like I am going to have to spend even more.

I need to be sure what I buy next.........

Is Raykay's advice the definitive answer (sorry -just need to be sure)

Many thanks,

Dave

Incartec are another company that make adapter and patch leads.

The early ZTs that were factory fitted with Kenwood units used the infra-red system, to convert that system to hard-wired needed the wiring modified.

The connector in your picture shows the connector and cables for the later single DIN units, which are all hard-wired.

Well, I am proper confused now (does not take much). I have a factory Kenwood unit at present which is infra red. The wire in my first pics is for a hard wired system? So I still don't know what lead or mods I need to do...... I seem to have wiring for both systems??

The steering wheel control cables are Blue/Orange and Blue/Purple, which you can see in the connector in your picture, so it appears you have both.
If your ZT was made about the time they dropped the infra- red system, it's a possibility.

On your thread about Cruise control you posted this picture..

It shows a BMW plug for your radio connections, also you have a picture in this thread showing two SWC wires in a green mini ISO plug that are not connected to anything. [Normally this way of connecting the SWC is used in post 2003 75's and ZT's]

When you fit your new Kenwood and SWC interface you will have to check that the Blue/Orange and Blue/Purple are connected to the BMW plug and not floating free.

You seem to have a mixture of BMW and ISO plugs.

Your infra red system seems to be disconnected. See if you can locate the small box that plugs into the small green mini ISO plug. This will be why you SWC does not work on your present system.

Hi Dave,

My current headunit is a standard (factory fit) kenwood with 6 cd changer in the boot.

The infra red system is currently working with this.

I'm therefore lost with this. The wiring on the car seems to be something of a dog's breakfast to say the least. Its not got the cruise wiring and seems to have a full house when it comes to the headunit. I spotted the old BMW plug and noticed that there wars and adapter to the current (stock?) head unit.

I'm now even more confused as to what I need to get this working.......

If its just a case of buying an adapter lead, I can do that but If i have to start experimenting I am going to just leave this too.

Cheers,

Dave
