CDTi Strange noise when turbo kicks in
Hi guys,
Having a problem with the car, Pulled out onto a main road earlier and accelerated hard, now the car is making a very loud whooshing sound as the turbo spools up from about 2k rpm It sounds like an air discharge of some sort. The noise goes away if you let off the throttle and also it doesn't do it if you rev it up at standstill. Also in reverse it is very sluggish and makes the same noise. Ive checked all the intercooler hoses and what I can feel of the turbo hoses and I can't see anything untoward. Performance wise it feels about the same, all the gear changes are as normal and there are no warning lights on the dash Can you suggest anything I can check? Thanks Matt

I expect the hard acceleration has forced out the intercooler oil seals, do a search, plenty of info on them and a bargain to replace.

You have a leakage from the intercooler, O ring seals, or the pipework. Most likely O rings, replace them with Viton ones.

Right, I've had the intercooler pipes off this morning, I did change the rings about 2 years ago and they are fine.
I've driven the car this morning and I can best describe this sound as a loud hairdryer I'm guessing the turbo is leaking somewhere there's definitely a drop in power and when under load like uphill the noise is constant. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers Matt.

Matt, maybe the intercooler pipe has started to delaminate from the inside?

Got the car in the air at a garage to see the turbo from underneath, all looking good.... After scratching our heads for a bit my mechanic (whom i dragged away from his family) sprayed some wd40 on the fan belt, drove the car and the noise was almost gone. So it looks like a slipping belt was the cause although ive never heard one make quite this noise before. Now I just need to wait until wednesday to get one and hope it cures it.
