am i correct about the engine having to come out to change the head gasket , i know they had to drop the rear of the engine to refit the turbo.

Yes, at the very least you have to bring it so far forward essentially removing it. I really wouldn't want to do one again if I could avoid doing so. Getting edgy now I'm sure someone will arrive in a minute and tell me how they do it with their hands tied behind their back though
