Well the first thing is to check the cooling fan cuts in on slow speed when aircon is switched on. Depoending on age it will have either a 3 speed which will require replacing or the later 2 speed in which case you might get away with just a new resistor I have just replaced my 3 speed fan using a Kenlowe from Jules as it is the cheaper & probably more reliable option

Think the first thing you should check is your radiator fan, should be running at low speed with A/C on.

Is it a constant whine that rises and falls with engine revs the whole time that the system is operating?

If it changes pitch with the engine revs and only when the air con is on then it's likely the air con and will need checking out - mine is whinning too.

If the whine becomes a whoop, get a recharge.

Had the same problem with the R75 and it's the compressor. The fan is unaffected with the engine revs. Got mine sorted with the Nationwide Auto Centre aircon overhaul with oil and freshner for £69. Whine now gone thankfully and nice and cool.

WHAT about the compressor box, How long before that needs replacing? Mines 7 years old now and still doing the do, however i have noticed its getting a little rattley when i get out of the car with engine on. It does not seem to effect the ice cold effect, just sounds worn a bit, but can these go without warning?.

In regard to the fan, my fan has not worked since dec 2006 and i decided not to replace it to see if it made no difference. The difference has been zilch with my diesel. The other week in Scotland(on hols) the car was in 93F and the temp does not get off just under half on the needle, i can have it in traffic and on long motorway runs fully loaded(8 hours) no difference.

I'm begining to wonder if you need the fan on these diesels in first place and mine has now done 3 years with out one.The climate control still functions and its still deep freeze and the cooling of the engine is not been a problem.

The only question i have is the following, does all of this effect my diesel engine heater? opposite within the winter months, as I have noticed that comes on less now than when new,That still functions but less often, are all these things linked in a round about way~?

The whining noise of some compressors can be cured by adding some more PAG oil during the re-gas.

If this makes no difference, chances are the compressor is worn, just like a tired engine can get.
Lack of cooling fan has been proven to shorten the life of AC compressors.

Some diesel owners reported to me that they "Boiled over" in traffic in the last heat wave.
My slightly biased advice is get your duff cooling fans changed !!

Is it worth the risk to your engine & compressor?
I'll leave that decision up to you

Yeah, that's why I asked about the nature of the OP's whining - mine was doing that, so I called in an air con specialist and he said it was making that noise because the compressor was having to work harder because the fan was on its way out.

Sure enough, sorting the fan out solved the problem - an expensive job, but cheaper than having a new compressor at the same time!
