75 Handbrake shoe replacement
Ok, my 2001 75 seems to be due new handbrake shoes. The handbrake barely holds the car on steep Plymouth hills (there's no more adjustment left in the handbrake), and my friendly mechanic had a quick peek and reckoned they were looking a bit past their best.
So, if I buy new shoes (for my mechanic to fit) should I be buying anything else? I see Rimmers list a shoe hold down kit, an adjuster and an expander (whatever that is). Is it advisable to replace these? Any other bits it's worth doing while the back end is under the wrench?

You may find that the drum surface has started to break up when the discs are removed, a common problem which will mean new discs/drums.
A new shoe hold down kit may be a good idea they also corrode. I think the new adjusters and expanders may just take up more adjustment with the cable I'm going to do that with mine shortly as although my shoes and discs on the tourer are only a year old I haven't been able to get the adjustment right. Wished I'd changed them now. Russ

Definitely go for the hold down kit, had one of those snap on me once, halfway through the job, so I couldn't drive anywhere and get a new one, that was on a Peugeot 406 though!!
And I didn't swear once (much)

I tried to buy a replacement expander, but they were on back order autumn last year.
I can't see the adjuster needing replacement as they can be adjusted to take up any wear. I'd do the discs / drums as someone else suggested. Both my cars were bad when I came to them. I think a lot of the problem comes down to the cables. Not the inner stretching, but the outer compressing. I replaced discs and shoes on my low mileage tourer and the handbrake performance is still rubbish in spite of correct adjustment and new parts. I will be trying something to fix this in the summer and will report back if it works. |
