Default Engine coming together at last.

I got back on the engine job this morning, I decided to whip out the pistons whilst the sump is off to check them. I found noticeable wear around the gudgeon pins so they're not going back in. I have some new ones that I'll use instead, the crank is like new, as are the shells. I cleaned the block where the liners sit and fitted the new liners. I used a space saver shim and a machined head to fasten down and hold the liners as they set. In the morning I'll clean the underside of the block and fit the pistons, I'm changing the filthy ladder rail too. I'm aiming for an ultra clean and smooth running k series with no oil loss/little usage. The head is lapped and the valves can go in when I finish a total clean of it. It's all gone a bit Anorak shaped.

Well done. Just one question is your Ladder Rail the uprated modified type as per the kit ZUA000080. This was introduced to help strengthen the the overall clamping of the head gasket i.e. multi steel head gasket and lower Oil Rail Kit.

Telfer.

Just the standard ladder, I don't rate the MLS Gaskets, so it doesn't need more clamping force for the gasket I'm using. It's going to be just fine as it is.

Default Afternoon update.

The sealant went off nicely this afternoon, the rain held off too so I've fitted the Pistons. It looks very nice and shows that almost all K series engines can be made as good as new again, cylinders and liners are priced well enough and oil seals and gaskets are not expensive.

Agree with what you say about being able to rebuild k series - you should see some of the baket cases I've fixed. One exception though - a cooked one, never try to fix one, it'll end in tears.

So you'll know that in the safe position pistons one and four are three millimetres further down the bores than two and three then

Yes, I measured them today, just to make sure I wasn't going mad

So tomorrow's job for me is all sixteen valves out, seats recut and valves refaced then lapped in with fine paste, and probably about four to five thou machined off to remove the scratch inflicted upon the otherwise pristine head face where some prawn had dragged it over the rear dowel........yep right over the fire ring mating surface

Anyway it's looking good Mike

To do all of the valves, normally takes me around two hours at a leisurely pace John, and fortunately in terms of refitting the head to the block, the engine is out of the car on this particular job and mounted on an engine stand

You couldn't make this one up though, when the head came off, the previous attempt failed at the job by the "specialist" who didn't diagnose the cause of the HGF.....a knackered water pump..... was compounded by something I've never encountered in all of the years I've worked on K series engines.

The dowels, yes there were two of them, so no problem there nope one was plastic and the other steel

On the plus side all of the liners are level, with a protrusion of a smidge under three thou from the joint face, so ripe to have fitted my very last LVB000230 gasket

The sad part of it, this was obviously a well looked after low mileage example of an MGF, laid waste by poor workmanship.

So here's a question, I'm loving the build pictures and the care that you are taking Saga Lout and I'm always impressed with the attention to detail that you and Brian display.

This is a bit beyond my capabilities due to things like space, lack of garage, tools and mostly talent , so what price would you put on a complete re-build like this on either a V6 or 4 cylinder engine? This is a curiosity thing, not planning on doing it (unless my numbers come up in a modest way) as I still want a V6, just don't tell the wife.
