Brian,

There is room on this forum for all views to be expressed without you making unnecessary, insulting remarks when I happen to hold a different one to you.

Please try not to be so provocative. You have the majority on your side anyway, so what's your problem?

Simon

It's only insulting if you look at it that way SImon, by the way have you ever considered or thought that your advice may be somewhat misguided in the case of this job?

For someone who in other cases is so very quick to defend the strict adherence to the letter of other MGR servicing guidelines, I find this most peculiar for you.

Is your own car running the original belts by the way?

You accused me of having my head in the sand. What other interpretation of that remark could there be other than insulting?

No. Have you?

You have already made that point in a recent thread and I explained myself. You didn't respond.

Yes. I would not say one thing to members and do the opposite myself.

I hope that you will now withdraw your personal and insulting remark publicly in this thread.

Simon, why have you not replaced the belts on your car?, it is now eighteen years old, which is three times the MGR prescribed service limit, irrespective of mileage.

You could do the job at a leisurely pace over a weekend, it's not particularly difficult, simply time consuming, and visual inspections of the belt are not sufficient as quite often there are no indicators of pending failure until it is too late

And that is what is meant by choosing to bury your head in the sand

Any advice appreciated.

I have explained to you in full the logic of my way of thinking. You choose to ignore it. It is you who is putting your head in the sand, not me.

I now ask you again politely to withdraw your offensive comment. If not I will report it to the moderators. You have been reprimanded for this sort of behaviour recently.

Meanwhile back on thread.............

Why not remove the plastic cam covers to observe the belts condition first. Rotate the engine a few times so the belts can be seen in different positions. Then make the decision.

What causes wear in the timing belt is the stress and temperature changes it is subject to while the engine is running. It won't simply degrade in a stationary vehicle (or while in the box on a workshop shelf either, as some have suggested). The "either xxx miles or xxx years" replacement guideline is misleading since it is based on an assumption of an average number of miles being covered per year with a healthy admixture or manufacturer's posterior-covering thrown in. Buy a two-year-old belt and you'll still get 90k out of it.

If you ever come a bit further North to the Kent/SE London border there's a garage I know in Eltham who is a bit of a Rover specialist. He's done my master & slave clutch cylinders and gave me a fixed price (that I've forgotten) for all the work on changing a V6 belt with a proper warranty which I plan on having done in a few months' time. I've also met another member there who was having some work done on his car.

Let me know if you want his details.
