Default DVLA MOT checks

I have been scouting around for an auto estate lately. Unfortunately not a 75 but a Volvo V70 diesel. I have found it very interesting viewing all the usual "Loads of money spent, very well maintained." etc, etc and then checking the MOT certs. My cars very rarely fail the MOT as they are checked beforehand and also faults rectified on service. The number of "Immaculate" cars that have a litany of MOT failures it is pretty obvious they are not well maintained but put in for a test and then see what they fail on. I went to see V70 steptronic which on inspection had never failed an MOT and had all the dealer stamps and recalls it should have. Very good price but the fuel consumption (2.4 petrol and auto) and the road tax, over £500 put me off. The DVLA check on line is a very handy tool. While on the subject my 2004 cdti manual estate seems to be worth very little. I have seen them go for very little even when in vgc. The most I have been offered as a trade in is £300. I would be better off scrapping it and selling the real wood dash and steering wheel.

I agree , great to see the history..I checked on an advert for the car i bought......ad read , I just replaced this , this and that for last MOT,etc etc.
Checked previous history , it did indeed fail on all he said he had replaced.
So when going to see car , we ( my nephew and I)firstly checked all the bits (expensive as it happened) he said had been replaced .Fortunately he was honest in everything he had written in Advert..I got ( what i believe) is a good car for the price I paid.

Being an old cynic I treat every car offered by a dealer as serviced and with a fresh MOT with the contempt it deserves.

I always get my car pre-mot'd so I'm as close to certain as possible that it'll pass on the day of the test because it's such a pain if they don't.

That said, when considering cars from Wales, England or Scotland the MOT checker is a really great tool.

It doesn't work on Northern Irish cars, which is a shame, but that's offset by the fact that because only Government run centres can issue certificates so there's no old boy network, no favours for mates, and no possibility of a car that doesn't meet standards passing.

I'd still like to be able to get our car's test history's though so if anybody knows a way of doing it please post it

If you're looking for a V70 the diesel 2.4L 6 speed auto with tiptronic is the one to go for Good fuel consumption and the road tax is reasonable too.

I've got a S60 2.4 auto and I'm very pleased with it. Both the S60 and the V70 were direct competitors for the 75 saloon and tourer and they even do walnut trim too, but it is rarer to find

Unfortunately I would say that the majority of cars on the road are owned by people who wait until MOT time to see what needs doing

I wouldn't necessarily not look at some that have had MOT failures in the past, because there will be some really decent ones that will be worth having.

Thanks Russ and I agree about the MOT's. It's the ones with the same advisory's time after time. Tyres run down to legal limit, rusty and pitted discs, low brake pads.
The Volvo you mention is just the one I have been looking at. I need an automatic these days, dodgy knee. I also had a look at a SAAB 9-5 1.9tid auto with only 84000 miles, new cam belt and water pump (72000 mile limit) and 7 stamps in the book. Very well looked after and lovely to drive but I was pipped at the post. (Hides behind sofa ready for all the shouts of "It's only a Vectra!!)

Hmmm although I see what you are saying I can see both sides of the argument. Generally, unless you are retired its very difficult nowadays with kids, work, home life etc to spend an age poring over a car to uncover by chance something that may be wrong with the car. Most people simply drive their car until it breaks, or its serviced, or its MOT'd. They either don't have the knowledge, time or inclination to do anything else.

Now a lot of our cars these days are sent through sales without any history. It doesn't mean they are bad cars, or have been mistreated but maybe through2 or 3 owners things get lost. By seeing the failure list on a car you can get an idea of whats been replaced, or fixed.

I do see the benefits of a clean MOT history and would identify that with a well cared for car (however to play devils advocate, the car could be serviced 1 day before MOT and all faults rectified then, the owner would still be driving around potentially for a year with a fault then have it fixed at service and then MOT'd straight afterwards, clean MOT history, but maintained the same as somebody who puts it in and see what it fails on.)
