Sorry, one more question. If the iPod isn't plugged in and you select the CD source on the head unit, what happens? Does it just say No Disc?

No it says "No ipod" , to use the CD player you would have to disconnect the Intravee connector and reconnect the CD changer from the connector in the passenger footwell where it connects to the car

I believe Alpine also make an alternative to the KCA 420i which has the added option of keeping the CD changer in circuit, but I can't remember what it is called. Certainly the Intravee has an option in it's set up menu for you to select another source (ie) CD, if you have the other Alpine box connected.

Default MP-3, 4 or 5

Thanks a lot Reebs for this very clear "how-to"

Will it also work for a MP3-, 4 or 5?

regards Ralph

No-one, as yet, seems to have mentioned another possibility... so I will.

How about purchasing and installing an iPod radio transmitter that can send the signal to be picked up by the vehicle's radio. This still allows the use of the CD changer and the iPod. I have one in another vehicle and use it with great success.

The only potential difficulty is the positioning of the cigar lighter socket which may hinder gear changes, unless an auxillary socket is fitted - £6 on eBay (excluding cable).

As the is integrating an iPod it will support whatever the iPod supports. The iPod outputs line level audio to the car radio.

iPods basically support Mpeg2 layer 3 (MP3), layer 4 (AAC/M4A) and "Apple Lossless" which is a non-destructive compression. Possibly will MPEG2 Layer 2 (mp2/mpg) work as well. For video there are other codecs supported.

WMA, FLAC, OGG and others can not be used unless you load your ipod with non-apple firmware (rockbox) but non-apple firmware is probably guaranteed not to work with the Intravee as it wouldn't talk "ipod" anymore.

I tried this for a while but there was significant interference on FM, perhaps due to aerial located in rear window? And you are right the power socket is a little awkward - I used a 3 way extension instead.

Now I'm going with the Intravee once everything arrives.

Anthony.

Most Ipod Transmitters do not broadcast in Stereo & the sound quality not 100%
I often inform users/friends that the Sound they are listening to is MONO !! Some can't tell the difference between Mono & Stereo sound.

When I last researched this many TX's didn't even have any spec ie Bandwidth Signal to Noise Ratio Stereo Separation etc.

If that's the case go ahead & buy a Transmitter........ignorance is Bliss as they say

To follow up on the above. I found that the pause feature was not working with a classic iPod on my setup, and so started to look a little further into the Intravee menus. The Dolby button is known as the "Clock" button in our cars. Below are the steps to enable this rather handy feature.

From the Main Menu, select SETUP

Then select SET DEFAULTS

Then select SETUP KEYS

Then select CLOCK KEY (not we do not have the Phone key on our standard setups)

Now select PAUSE/PLAY (depress the selctor knob to activate)

And thats it! now when you press the dolby button whilst a track is playing, it will pause until you press the dolby button again.
