Dont get me wrong here, i'm not criticising anybody for trying to save a few bob, also a well done on the groundwork Ed; but having been the victim of an incompetent garage that wrecked an auto box by using incorrect fluid, i think you should stick to the recommended item. It's not as if it's scarce or you change it regularly, maybe only the once, maybe twice, during your ownership.

It maybe that other oils have a better specification, remember this gearbox design is at least 13 years old and the oil spec will be from that era. It does no harm to see what specification some of these other oils meet and if they are suitable. At present it is a paper or more accurately and electronic exercise. If nothing else it adds to the knowledge bank. Probably it doesn't meet the specification, but the knowledge will be there to advise other who may consider this or other oils in their gearbox. What it is not going to be is some garage fitter deciding that this or that oil is suitable, but a carefully considered examination. In my experience oil companies can cross reference their oils with other oil company's products so it should be a quick yes or no.

The point i'm trying to make is if peeps sway towards another brand then the danger of a foul up is greater, been there etc

There has been lots written on this subject in the past and the concensious is that you should really use the original Texaco fluid rather then the generic spec'd oils.

I'm not trying to save money but the MG badged up 5lt containers must be filled by someone and maybe it is not Texaco but some other outfit? It would be nice to know where Rimmers buy them from?

This gearbox is not only fitted to 75's, ZT's so a generic oil to the same specification should be available. Worth doing a bit of digging. What is Ford, Mazda, VW and Seat charging for this oil.
Ford Mondeo owners are using the Rover Brand fluid.............

As a generalisation you are correct but I think there is need to be a little cautious. In considering an alternative do not just look at the spec. make sure the fluid (not oil) is specifically stated as suitable for the Jatco box.
Texaco N402 was the fluid specified by Rover when the specs were originally drawn up. However, Texaco (Chevron) later improved their spec. and that is marketed as TEXAMATIC 7045E.
If neither of these is available then I could understand the necessity to look for an alternative but that is not the case. Yes, someone fills the containers for Xpart & Land Rover, probably from bulk, same as many components for our cars come from a multitude of suppliers but are marked as Rover (or BMW). I have a feeling that N403 is indeed 7045E but is not of concern.
I contacted many sources way back in 2004/2005 in regard to the correct fluid, even Jatco themselves (who refer you to the car manufacturer ! ! !)
A senior member of the .org club contacted 10 Rover dealers over the issue. Result:- 9 out of 10 said they used Dextron. WRONG. This fluid is held by nearly every garage for ATF changes as it is O.K. for many auto boxes, BUT NOT FOR JATCO.
So, I then contacted Castrol (manuf. of Dextron ) and have their reply:-
WE DO NOT MANUFACTURE ANY ATF FLUID SUITABLE FOR THE JATCO BOX.
Of all the auto box specialists contacted only one came up with a credible answer when he read out to me the supplementary Jatco update specifying the later Texamatic 7045E. (This was also the only auto specialist that told me the cracked reverse piston could be replaced without removal of the box)
Just to go one further, Ashcroft Transmissions Ltd (probably the largest reconditioner of auto boxes) told me that they refill with Dextron http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ons/icon13.gif
