Stromness station from the bay. Stromness was originally a whaling station, but in the 1930s was converted to a repair facility.

Spare propellers still litter the beach at Husvik.

A different kind of fishing boat. These guys make a living by going round the shipyards and docks, fishing with hooks and magnets. They pick up all sorts of scrap that has been thrown into the water. The coil of grotty wire rope on the bow will fetch them a few Yuan.

They're brave going out on the water in that boat

Indeed, even the locals in the yard said that they wouldn't like to step on board it! Sometimes the guy was out on his own (photo below), and I've seen it laden with a lot of scrap. It didn't sink!

Another craft that I would not like to go any distance in was this vessel seen in Luanda, Angola. It had no name, no port of registration, no flag of nationality, no call sign, so no visible identification.

The two man crew (both South Africans) told me that they were "trading" up and down the coast. Quite a dangerous thing to do I thought, as the country was in the middle of a civil war, and they would not have been flavour of the month.

The driver of the crawler crane decided to take a short cut on the fitting-out jetty.

It was a bad move, as the tracks broke through the thin concrete surface which was not supported underneath.

False economy?

The driver jumped out of the crane which was lucky for him, as the jib tore off and landed on top of the cab. Not only did he jump out, but he ran to the gate and disappeared down the road.

Wow

A lucky escape, from getting squished and getting caught

Nice pics always nice to see lesser known parts of the world and the little stories that go with them.
