Do the belts before selling?

As some of you know, I have a low mileage (49,000) ZT190+ in cracking condition. Just had new LUK clutch and slave cylinder fitted.

I want to sell her to fund the purchase of a diesel tourer but, although the previous owner has confirmed that she was serviced regularly in his 10 year tenure, he has no recollection of the belts ever being done.

I can get the belts / water pump done for around £450 - is it worth doing them to sell it as a hassle free car or, if YOU were the buyer, would you prefer them not to be done so you could organise it yourself?

I have exactly the same problem with one of my ZTs that I will need to sell soon. I'll also be interested to hear peoples views on this.

With proof the belts have been done the car will be easier to sell to most buyers providing your provenance is good and they can verify it.

The ones that have proven hard to sell in the past have been the ones that were done by self mechanics, even with parts receipts, and the ones that haven't been done at all

It would sway me as a buyer, as it's one less job to do once I've bought the car.

When I bought mine in Feb the widow of the previous owner could not find any evidence of the belts being done (62k car) so we agreed to go halves...£350 knocked off the price.

When I got the car home I found in the cars service log that they were done in 2014 at 48k

So as they are due in another 3 years, going halves was a good deal for you.

Spending £450 on belts wont increase your selling price by that much in most cases. I'd personally just put it up for sale and offer to have the belts done for £450 if the buyer is willing to pay to have it done

Rick, do you mind if I ask you how many you've sold?

It's just that over here. without the belts done we consider them to be scrap value plus a small allowance for condition.

I think I'll stick to the nine-year cycle and get them done in 2023. Just putting a reminder in my Google calendar now.....
