Does your PC have Windows Movie Maker?

If it does you can use that.

Hello Phil

Win XP

Click Start

All Programs Look in the list if not there

Click Start - All Programs - Accessories

Some versions of Vista have it, I have Vista Ultimate which has it included.

I only have XP and don't seem to have it. I have found it online though so will look into downloading it. Would I need to buy a microphone or do most laptops have one built in?

Most should have a microphone built in,

what format of camcorder are you using?

If it is Digital with a USB Connection you do not need to use any other equiptment.
If it is Digital with an Firewrie Connection then you need a 1394 PCMCIA Adapter card. If it is an analogue camcorder then the ebay item in Paranoid Carlos's post would be ok.

Also check which version of XP you have by clicking Start - Control - Panel -System If you have Service pack 2 you will have Movie Maker as it is included in the Update Pack

I use this;

http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/

If you open the movie, (and it might be worth checking the movie format is compatible with the application before downloading and installing it), there is a 'Streams' menu item. Within the menu list from that there is a 'Stream List' menu item. This will bring up another window with the audio stream highlighted. There's a 'Save WAV' button that will save the audio stream as a .wav file if you want to save the audio from video. Once that's done, click the 'Disable' button and click 'OK'.

In the main window, from the 'Video' menu select 'Direct stream copy' then from the 'File' menu select 'Save As'. This will then save the video minus the audio as you disabled it as above.

Open the saved audio-less movie and, using the stream list as before, you can add your own audio and save the movie.

Of course, if you're using a Non Linear Editing application such as Adobe Premiere or suchlike, you can just edit the audio from within that. You can copy and paste audio files into the footage.
