Default Rover 75 Con 1.8 - that bonnet problem

I spent this morning doing the front bumper/bonnet gap adjustment thing - followed the method as described in the how-to forum and was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. The last step was to close the bonnet to check the gap - and then found that the bonnet would not pop open when I operated the release lever. Off on holiday on Friday so I need to check fluid levels and would appreciate any tips on how to get the bonnet open!

I just went to check the water before going off to wales and my lever went floppy and the bonnet did not open. I checked the back of the lever and the cable is still attached, how do I open the bonnet and correct the problem. Please help as wife and children are wanting to have their weekend break...
